GRATEFUL DEAD: Dick’s Picks Vol. 6—Hartford Civic Center 10/14/83 (Limited, Hand-Numbered, 180-Gram 5-LP Set)

It’s our first ‘80s show on vinyl..,and it’s a great one! Indeed, there are a lot of reasons why archivist Dick Latvala anointed this show as the first ‘80s concert to be released in his Dick’s Picks series—a heartfelt version of “Althea,” the ever-ascending “Stella Blue”, the almost Zappa-esque opening of “Spinach Jam” segueing into “The Other One” and even the first-ever release of the Garcia-Hunter song “Keep Your Day Job”—but it’s the pair of medleys from that fall night in Hartford that made this show Pick-worthy. Most Dead Heads considered themselves lucky if they got to hear just one of the trademark medleys “Scarlet Begonias”/Fire on the Mountain” and/or “Estimated Prophet”/Eyes of the World” in a single show, but this night the Dead played them both back-to-back, each clocking in at over a half hour (and exceptionally strong versions at that)! For our 5-LP vinyl release of this complete show, we have, as usual, pulled out all the stops, starting with a fresh mastering job by Jeffrey Norman (Jeffrey’s report, verbatim: “I think they are considerably better than the previous Brookvale sides, or even the CD release. I helped out several sides that needed better EQ, and cleaned up unwanted noises and clicks”). Then we turned Jeffrey’s master over to Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music to cut the lacquers, and pressed the set on 180-gram black vinyl (complete with insert) at our preferred pressing plant, Gotta Groove Records.
